Tibetan or Nepalese dhyangro frame drum

Tibetan or Nepalese dhyangro frame drum. The circular wooden frame is covered with animal hide held tight by criss-crossing bands wound along the rim. The wooden handle is carved with human faces, stars, the head of a bird, and abstract patterns. Dhyangro frame drums were traditionally used in the Himalayas by the village shaman, or jhankri, in various rituals. A small item, possibly a fetish, is sealed loosely inside the drum to add complexity to the instrument's sound. Some wear to the drum's surface and a rich patina on the handle.
c. 1900. Height 25 ½ in. $950.
